I got a new toy! To be honest, I was a little prepared to be disappointed with this one, and so far I haven’t been disappointed…
So to clarify, I am a little disappointed in the toy, which is what I expected, so I wasn’t disappointed by failure to meet my expectations. On the other hand, I was ready for there to be problems, so when there were, it wasn’t really much of a disappointment.
The toy is a Garmin Edge 810. I do expect it to be worth its weight in gold (it doesn’t weigh much) for the Giro, because it will mean I don’t keep having to stop and look at the map. I thought of getting an earlier model years ago, and have been holding out because I always thought there was so much more that could be done with them and expected so much more functionality to come. Finally though for this tour I caved in and just went with what is available. So as an engineer, I am disappointed in how limited it is, but I am still happy at the idea of having the navigational help! And of course I have only had it for about 12 hours and it may be that everything I want is there and I just haven’t found it yet.
I went for one quick ride with it this morning, you can see it here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/295906544
I will post a lot more about it once I have got to know it, but for now I am still figuring it out!
